Russia and the United States began the establishment of a communication channel in Syria at the level of generals

Russia and the United States held an initial exchange of views on the establishment of a communication channel in Syria at the level of generals. About TASS reported the press Secretary of the Chairman of the joint chiefs of staff us armed forces Gregory Hicks.

According to him, among the parties “held a discussion on the working level” of questions of this kind. This allowed “to share their initial thoughts about how can be set a channel in order to further reduce the risk of confrontation” on Syrian territory and airspace.

Hicks declined to specify exactly when, where and with whose participation the first round of discussions on the new communication channel.

On 7 March, the chiefs of General staffs of armed forces of Russia, Turkey and the United States in the trilateral meeting in Antalya discussed regional security in Syria and Iraq. The conversation was about the current situation in combating terrorism on the Syrian territory in the context of increase of efficiency of counteraction in the future to all the extremist organizations.

The meeting was attended by chief of General staff of the Russian Armed forces Valery Gerasimov, the head of the Turkish General staff Hulusi Akar and the Chairman of the Committee of chiefs of staffs of armed forces of the United States Joseph Dunford.

In October 2016, Moscow and Washington signed the Memorandum on safety of flights over Syria. Document reglementary the actions of all aircraft and drones in the airspace of this country, and intended to ensure safety. It contains a set of rules and restrictions, intended to prevent the occurrence of incidents between the military of Russia and the United States. To ensure prompt settlement of contentious issues in the action in Syria a valid line of communication.
