A ban on the wearing of Muslim headscarves in schools, like any other religious paraphernalia, “destroys the religious feelings of Russians and undermine Russian society.” This opinion was expressed by head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov in interview to the program “Vesti on Saturday” with Sergei Brilev on the TV channel “Russia 1”.
“I believe that prohibition was deadly for Russian society, because we are citizens of Russia, multinational and multi-confessional country,” he said.
According to Kadyrov, “it is wrong to prevent the separation of the Russian society”, forbidding people to honor the religion and traditions of his people. “We have a Federal government, and we must strengthen our state, adhering to the customs, culture and religions,” he said.
Minister of education and science Olga Vasilieva on January 24 at a press conference in TASS commented on the situation in the village of Belozerye in the Republic of Mordovia, where teachers and students were required to abandon the wearing of Muslim headscarves. The Minister reminded about the secular nature of education in Russia, expressing the view that true believers do not try to emphasize their attitude to the faith “with attributes”.
Earlier questions about the wearing of Islamic headscarves in schools was the subject of a Supreme court of the Russian Federation. In the summer of 2013, the court refused to reverse the decision of the Stavropol regional court, which banned girls from Muslim women wear headscarves, and in 2015, the Supreme court upheld the ban on wearing Muslim headscarves in the schools of Mordovia.
