The trade Union of the RAS: financing of fundamental science in Russia has sunk to the level of Mexico

Funding for fundamental science in Russia is at the level of Mexico, said today, June 26, on a press-conferences in Moscow the head of the analytical centre of the Union of workers of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yevgeny Onishchenko. The correspondent reports about it Indicator.Ru.

According to Onishchenko, the funding of basic research in developed countries ranges from 0.4 to 0.6% of GDP.

“For moderately developed countries in Europe, such as Poland, Hungary, Portugal, Greece (not the developed countries, as we have seen), Estonia, it (the level of funding of fundamental science — approx. Indicator.Ru) is in the range between 0.2 and 0.4% of GDP,” — said Onishchenko.

“In 2015, the level of expenditure on basic research of the state (Russia — approx. Indicator.Ru) and small non-state Supplement was OECD estimates that 0.16% of GDP. This year will be good if 0,15−0,14%, then depending on evaluations. In 2019 may fall to 0.13% of GDP. 0.16% of GDP — is the level of Mexico, the countries, their scientific achievements are unknown. And in absolute terms, in dollars, if you count, Mexico’s spending on basic research in 2015 was almost exactly the same,” — said Onishchenko.

He added that in 2019 under current budget plans, Russia will lag behind Mexico in terms of funding for fundamental research and will reach the level of Chile — 0.13 percent of GDP.
