Representatives of the administration of U.S. President Donald trump conduct secret negotiations with Russia concerning the establishment of zones of de-escalation in the South-Western part of Syria. With this statement on Friday, June 9, was made by the newspaper The Wall Street Journal.
According to the newspaper, the two sides held at least two “secret meetings”, the last of which took place in Jordan about two weeks ago. It, as noted, was attended by representatives of the Jordanian authorities.
The newspaper specifies that the next meeting was to be held in Amman this week, but it had to be postponed indefinitely due to the inability to agree on the time.
It is noted that the holding of the next round of negotiations is under threat because of the growing tension between Washington and Damascus. It also indicates that the White house would like to find a way to negotiate with Moscow and destroy the banned terrorist organization “Islamic state”.
If the negotiations about the installation of de-escalation areas in the South-West of Syria will be successful, the parties may begin negotiations on the introduction of similar zones in other parts of the country, according to sources of the newspaper.
