Erdogan invited to quickly introduce visa-free regime between Turkey and Russia

Moscow. March 10. INTERFAX.RU — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for acceleration of process of introduction of a visa-free regime between Turkey and Russia.

“With regard to the introduction of a visa-free regime, we are also taking action. I think we need to expedite this activity,” — said Erdogan, speaking at a Council of high level cooperation.

He expressed the opinion that this issue will be resolved in the near future.

Russia from January 1, 2016 has suspended the visa-free regime with Turkey.

The decision was taken in November, shortly after Turkish air force shot down a Russian su-24 bomber in the skies over Syria.

The agreement between the governments of Russia and Turkey on terms of mutual trips of citizens was signed on 12 may 2010 in Ankara and entered into force on 16 April 2011. Until April 16, 2011 between the two countries was simplified visa regime. The Russians could get a tourist visa for a period of 60 days at any point of crossing the borders of Turkey.
