The ruins of the ancient city described by Homer in the Iliad were discovered in Greece

Archaeologists have found in Greece the ruins of the ancient city of Meliboy, described by Homer in the Iliad Greece, near the foot of Mount Mavrovouni, on a stretch extending to the rocky shores of the North Aegean Sea, according to Heritage Daily. They believe that this is the city of Meliboy, which was described by the ancient Greek poet-storyteller Homer in the Iliad.

Scientists have discovered buildings of the Hellenistic period, erected from alabaster and local stone. They concluded that the city was built around the 3rd-2nd centuries BC. Among the architectural elements that experts stumbled upon were an entablature – a horizontal ceiling over the colonnade, five Doric-style capitals, a marble leg of a bench, two heads of children made of marble, the base of a statue and parts of columns.

iron nails, Thessalian and Macedonian bronze coins, arrowheads, bronze rings, as well as clay lamps, drinking vessels and amphora fragments. Among the finds, the team also found sealed tiles with the names of the owners of ceramic shops.

But most of all, the archaeologists were interested in the tiles with the inscription “MELIVOIAS”, which they associated with Meliboia, an ancient city and polis in Thessaly, which Homer mentioned in the Second Song of the Iliad. There he listed all the Greek cities that participated in the campaign against Troy under King Agamemnon. Until now, the location of Meliboya remained a mystery to scientists.

Earlier, an international team of scientists described an artifact with the oldest dotted ornament known to date from found in Eurasia. Radiocarbon dating has shown that the age of the unusual design on the ivory pendant reaches 41,500 years, which is two thousand years earlier than other examples of this type of decorative design.
