The opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem coincides with an important date — the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Israel, which was proclaimed by the United Nations on 14 may 1948.
Having undergone great suffering during the Second world war — at the hands of the Nazi regime killed nearly 6 million Jews, representatives of the Jewish movement has made the creation of the state. This became possible after the partition of Palestine, previously under the rule of great Britain. It is worth noting that, according to the UN plan, after the partition of Palestine on the territory of the habitation of Jews and Arabs, Jerusalem was to become an international city under UN administration.
The establishment of a Jewish state was possible thanks to the consistent position of the United States and the Soviet Union. Despite the fact that the benevolent position of the USSR was unexpected both for Arabs and for Jews, the Soviet Union fully supported the creation of Israel. And although Soviet leader Joseph Stalin harbored particularly warm feelings toward Jews, his stance on Israel were motivated by more pragmatic considerations.
The Soviet leader was motivated by a desire to act in defiance of great Britain, whose influence in the middle East, the Soviet Union wanted to weaken: “Stalin saw his own reasons to support Israel, and one of them is the possibility that the British out of the Middle East,” wrote Joshua Rubenstein in the book “the Last days of Stalin.”
In addition, many of the founders of the Jewish state were supporters of socialism and the Soviet Union hoped that the new country will be in the orbit of Moscow.
“Fake game” and “the doctors”
The USSR became the first nation to fully recognize Israel. The first foreign Minister of the new state, Moshe Sharett wrote in a telegram to the Kremlin that Israel expresses “deep appreciation and respect of the people of Israel for the staunch position taken by the Soviet delegation to the UN in support of the formation of an independent and sovereign Jewish state.”
A few days after the recognition in Moscow and the Embassy of Israel and the first Ambassador of the Jewish state in the Soviet Union became Golda Meir, later Prime Minister of Israel, one of the largest political figures of this country.

However, the future Prime Minister has been in Moscow for long — in April of 1949 she went to Israel, where he received a new assignment in the government: “I have learned a lot here and I think my time here has been one of the greatest experiences of my life.”
After four years in the relations between Israel and the Soviet Union will be the first crisis, which will lead to the rupture of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The cause was a terrorist act on the territory of the Soviet mission in tel Aviv in February 1953. During the explosion seriously injured three Soviet employee. The Israeli government has condemned these actions, the police started search of criminals in Moscow, however, considered these measures to be insufficient, calling them “fake game”. In the note, directed in tel Aviv, said that the Soviet Union ceases all relations with Israel.
