At least ten employees of the department were convicted of crimes involving minors. Although most of the cases were referred to US prosecutors for trial, only one member of the organization was charged. The rest of the cases were sent back to the CIA for internal review, and the criminals remained virtually unpunished.
For example, the agency fired without further prosecution one of the employees who had intercourse with a 2-year-old and 6-year-old child. Another employee who bought child porn was dismissed by the department. The only CIA officer charged with crimes against children was additionally under investigation on charges of mishandling of classified materials.
Former officials told BuzzFeed News that prosecutors are refusing to open criminal cases, as in the case of a CIA investigation afraid of losing control over classified information.
The agency's lawyers fear that the accused may disclose sources and methods when testifying.
