Avakov called on the Ukrainian government to be adequate

Arsen Avakov asked the Ukrainian government to refrain from attempts to curb freedom of speech

The Ukrainian government should adequately respond to protest actions and not use them as grounds for fighting the opposition and infringing on freedom of speech. Former Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov spoke about this during the 12th Kiev Security Forum, which is broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Open Ukraine Foundation.

The ex-Interior Minister called on the Ukrainian leadership to be adequate and asked him to refrain from trying to “curb freedom of speech, or close regular TV channels, or declare a coup d'etat performed by opposition parties.

Avakov noted that democracy “always presupposes a balance”, and in a democratic society different opinions have the right to exist, to which the state needs to listen.

Arsen Avakov served as Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine since February 2014 until July 15, 2021. After his resignation, he announced that he resigned from his post, because he did not want to participate in things with which he did not agree. At the same time, the former head of the department recalled that earlier he could openly speak out to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zeleny, if he considered his point of view on this or that issue “complete nonsense.”
