Ukraine shot the journalist Arkady Babchenko
MOSCOW, may 29 — RIA Novosti. In Kiev were shot by the Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko, said a member of the Collegium of the Ministry of internal Affairs of Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada Deputy Anton Gerashchenko.
“The killer was waiting in the stairwell in the entryway. When Arkady opened the door of the apartment, the cowardly killer took a few shots in the back”, — he wrote on his page in Facebook.
About the assassination, the police said the wife Babchenko. A wounded journalist died in the ambulance.
At the scene on the street Nikolsko-Sloboda on duty investigative team, opened a criminal case. According to preliminary information, the killer could have an accomplice.
The interior Ministry also said that neighbors of the victim heard shots. The police believe that the criminal used a silencer.
Arkady Babchenko worked as a war correspondent in “Moskovsky Komsomolets” and “Novaya Gazeta”, has collaborated with channel one and TVC, covered the events of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict.
The journalist has fled Russia after ambiguously spoke about the victims of the crash of Tu-154 in December 2016. In Kiev, he led the program “Prime: Babchenko” on channel ATR.
Reaction to the killing of
Russia condemned the killing of Babchenko. So, the foreign Ministry demanded from Kiev to promptly and transparently investigate a crime. International bodies in turn must take this process under their own control, according to the foreign Ministry.
The IC of Russia opened a criminal case.
The presidential Council on human rights called human rights defenders to participate in the investigation. The Union of journalists expressed its outrage in connection with the incident and has indicated the need for early identification of all involved in the assassination.
In the state Duma said that the murder proves once again that Ukraine has become the most dangerous country for journalists, and the authorities cannot guarantee the safety of media staff.
In the Federation Council believe that Kiev will use the death Babchenko for his own political purposes.
The OSCE called on the Ukrainian authorities to immediately investigate the murder.
Violence against journalists
This is not the first murder of the employee of the media in Ukraine. During the protests on the Maidan in 2014 shot the journalist of the newspaper Sportanalytic Igor Kostenko. Then he was killed by the reporter of the newspaper “Vesti” Vyacheslav Veremey.
In 2015 in Kiev shot the Ukrainian opposition journalist Olesya Elderberry. In 2016, his car blew Pavel Sheremet, who about ten years worked on Russian television.
