May was a record month in the number of murders in Mexico in 20 years
MEXICO city, 21 Aug — RIA Novosti. A record number of murders — almost 2.2 thousand — was registered in Mexico in may of this year, the highest monthly figure for the last two decades.
According to the Executive Secretariat of the national system of public security, in may the record was broken in 2011, when the may figure hardly exceeded 2 thousands of murders. Previously it was thought that the period may-August 2011 was the high level of violence that is associated with the war on drug traffickers, declared Felipe Calderon, who was then President of the country.
After that there was the significant decline in homicide rates, which lasted until 2015, when once again began to rise, leading to new record levels. Since the beginning of 2017 in Mexico killed 9,9 thousand people, which means almost 30% growth to the same in 2016.
The highest homicide rates recorded in the States of Chihuahua, Colima, Guerrero, Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Mexico city.
