In 2017 will remain extreme and unusual weather conditions

GENEVA, March 21. /Offset. TASS Konstantin Gain/. The world meteorological organization (WMO) predicts continuation in 2017 unusual and extreme weather events after 2016, which was the warmest in the entire history of scientific observations of climate.

This is stated in the published in Geneva the WMO statement.

“2016 made history with a record value of global temperature, extremely low sea-ice extent, the relentless rise in sea level and ocean heat content” — reminiscent of the meteorologists, stressing that “extreme and unusual trends continue in 2017”.

As explained by the Director of the world climate research programme David Carlson, even without the strong currents of El niño in 2017 “there are other major changes across the planet” that go beyond the understanding of meteorologists climate system. “We are now in truly uncharted territory,” he said.

In WMO indicate in this regard that last winter at least three times in the Arctic was observed “the polar equivalent of heat waves” caused by the influx of warm moist air due to the powerful Atlantic storms. The extent of Antarctic sea ice was at a record low. In the United States in February was recorded 11743 heat temperature record. From the long and extreme heat in January and February affected a number of areas of Australia, whereas in some areas of the Arabian Peninsula and North Africa stood unusually severe cold.

In 2016, according to the WMO, 1.1 degrees Celsius was the average temperature exceeded the pre-industrial period and by 0.06 degrees previous record was recorded in 2015. As experts explain, powerful phenomenon El niño 2015-2016 “increased warming in 2016 in addition to long-term climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions.” In WMO believes that “the impact of human activities on the climate system is becoming more and more obvious.”
