The number of prisoners in Russia has reached a historic low

In the framework of the humanization of punishments in the XXI century in Russia the number of prisoners has decreased almost two times, reports “Interfax” with reference to the press office of the Federal service of execution of punishments (FSIN).

It is noted that as of 1 January 2017 in prisons, penal colonies and detention centers held approximately 630 thousand people (of which about 523 thousand in prison and more than 107 thousand in jail), which is the lowest number this century.

The greatest number of prisoners of 1.92 million were recorded in 2000, after which the rate has been declining every year.

According to the service, the number of those sentenced to punishments not connected with isolation from society is not fundamentally changed, their quantity comes up to a million people (currently registered in the criminal-Executive inspections consists of more than 417 thousand people sentenced to this kind of punishment).
