Putin will meet with the head of South Ossetia

The President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the head of South Ossetia (RSO), Leonid Tibilov in mid-March to discuss an agreement on the procedure of joining individual units of the armed forces of the Republic in the Russian armed forces. This was announced by the assistant to the President Vladislav Surkov, reports TASS on Friday, March 10.

In addition, the parties will discuss planned in the Republic the increase of pensions and salaries, as well as the construction of the medical cluster in South Ossetia, said Surkov.

South Ossetia has the status of partially recognized Republic. It declared independence from Georgia in December 1991. The legal status of the region as an independent state recognized five countries — Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Tuvalu.

In may last year it was reported that Tibilov and President of the Parliament of the Republic Anatoly Bibilov has signed a statement on holding a referendum on joining South Ossetia to Russia. The vote is scheduled for 2017.

Tibilov was elected President of South Ossetia in 2012. The next presidential elections scheduled for 9 April.
