Mystery of the green ice of Antarctica

Green ice appeared in the Bay in the Ross sea in Antarctica, reports Daily Mail , citing NASA.

American space satellite took photos of green ice. This unusual color is due to the large number of phytoplankton at the water surface and is common in West Antarctica.

Phytoplankton or microalgae are microscopic marine plants that live in the upper part of the ocean where sunlight penetrates the water. They are similar to terrestrial plants because they contain chlorophyll. Such algae are often found in the waters of Antarctica in the spring and summer, when the ice melts and begins to flow sunlight.

However, now in the southern hemisphere autumn and scientists wonder why the bloom was not in season. In April 2017 a research expedition plans to go to Antarctica to study this phenomenon.
