The Pentagon has accused Russia of violating the “spirit and letter” of the INF Treaty

The U.S. military accused the Russian Federation in violation of the “spirit and letter” of the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range nuclear forces (INF), reported RIA Novosti citing a statement by the Chairman of the joint chiefs of staff of the United States Paul Selva.


 


According to the American side, Russia places allegedly not satisfying the contract of the missile system.


 


“The system itself poses a risk for the majority of our facilities in Europe and we are confident that Russia deliberately (it) places to pose a threat to NATO and objects in the area of responsibility of NATO,” said Selva, speaking before Congress.


 


According to the Agency, the Director of the Department for nonproliferation and arms control, the Russian foreign Ministry Mikhail Ulyanov stated earlier that all the talk about placing missiles violate the INF Treaty are unfounded.


 


In addition, the press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov said that Russia was and remains committed to its international obligations, including under this agreement.


 


The Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range nuclear forces (INF) was signed on 8 December 1987 in Washington, Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan. Indefinite contract entered into force on 1 June 1988. Signatories to the document, the sides pledged not to produce, not to test and not to deploy ballistic and cruise land-based missiles of medium and short range.
