Portuguese Parliament recognized the Holodomor as a genocide

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the Parliament of Portugal on Friday recognized the Holodomor in Ukraine in 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.


 


“Today the Portuguese Parliament recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people”, – said the leader of the country on his page in Facebook.


 


It is noted that the initiative for consideration in the Parliament of Portugal was filed by the representatives of the social democratic party. The text States that the party condemns “all forms of totalitarianism and all crimes against humanity, such as in the 30-ies in Ukraine.”


 


The Holodomor in 1932-1933 was observed on the whole territory of the USSR. According to different estimates, the mass famine in the territory of the Ukrainian SSR, the Byelorussian SSR, the Northern Caucasus, the Volga region, southern Urals, Western Siberia, Northern Kazakhstan, claimed the lives of two to eight million people.
