Matvienko proposed to create the Crimean Athos

The Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko said on the feasibility of developing the pilgrimage in the Crimea, and proposed to create on the territory of the Republic own like Athos monasteries on mount Athos in Greece. On Thursday, March 2, reports TASS.

“I think we have every reason to make your Crimean Athos. This is a very powerful, good, the right direction,” the Senator said at the meeting of the organizing Committee of the III International forum of Livadia, which will be held in Yalta in June.

She added that it is necessary to hold consultations with the Russian Orthodox Church on this issue.

In February last year during a working trip to Kurgan oblast Matvienko told about the unique Bear lake that possesses curative properties and is, in her words, the analogue of the Dead sea. The Senator lamented that few people know about this monument of nature and advised regional authorities to consider how to make it attractive for tourists.

Athos — the name of the mountain and Peninsula in Macedonia, Greece in the North East of Greece. In the system of administrative regions of Greece is called “Autonomous monastic state of the Holy Mountain.”
