The U.S. Senate approved Herbert McMaster assistant to the President for homeland security
McMaster will take the place of Michael Flynn, who left the position after the media reported on a meeting held between him and the Russian Ambassador to the United States the conversation about anti-Russian sanctions.
WASHINGTON, March 16. /Offset. TASS Anatoly Bochinin/. The U.S. Senate approved at the meeting Lieutenant-General of the land forces of Herbert McMaster assistant to the President for national security with the preservation of his rank. It was voted by 86 senators, 10 opposed.
Immediately after the adoption of the upper chamber of this decision, the White house issued a special statement.
“President Donald trump appreciates the support of the Senate Committee on armed services and the full Senate, which will allow General McMaster to stay in the service in the army in his rank, taking up the position of assistant for national security”, — stated in the text.
Usually the assistants to the President for national security approval of the upper house of Congress is not required, in contrast to Ministers, whose nominations confirmed by the Senate. However, McMaster has expressed a desire to maintain its current rank, in this regard, he had to go through the same procedure.
54-year-old McMaster participated in the Gulf war (1990-1991), the war in Iraq (2003-2011) and operation enduring freedom in Afghanistan (2001-2014)
Lieutenant-General also acted as expert at London’s International Institute for strategic studies.
On a post of the assistant on national security he will succeed Michael Flynn, who was forced to leave his post after the Washington Post reported on a meeting held between him and the Russian Ambassador to the USA Sergei Kislyak conversation about anti-Russian sanctions.
Prior to that, at the same meeting, the Senate approved Daniel Coates as Director of national intelligence.
