In social networks there are colorful pictures of the Gulf of Preserves Bay in the North-East of the Australian island of Tasmania, which took the unusual color of electric blue due to the invasion of bioluminescent algae.
The water in the Bay became partially bright blue last weekend, which immediately attracted the attention of professional photographers and Amateurs. Some have compared the shooting of the observed phenomenon with the Northern (or as it is more accurate to call in the case of Australia, southern) lights, which capture the more complicated, reports Mashable.
These algae are bioluminescent single-celled organisms-dinoflagellates, also known as “sea sparkles”. Bioluminescence in living organisms usually occurs as a defense mechanism against predators, but it may illuminate the hunters towards their prey.
In fresh water bioluminescent organisms do not live, so that such great pictures can only be done at ocean shores.
