UN: more than 20 million people in four African countries threatened by famine

Deputy UN Secretary-General for humanitarian Affairs Stephen O’brien at the meeting of the Security Council of the world organization said that the humanitarian crisis in four African countries — Yemen, Nigeria, Somalia and South Sudan — have become the largest since the founding of the organization in 1945.

According to him, the world is at a critical juncture of history as it was faced with the largest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the UN.

“Currently, more than 20 million people in four countries are threatened by famine. Without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply die from starvation, many others will suffer and die from diseases”, — quotes the words of O’brien TASS.

Zamgenseka UN has warned that if the international community ignores what is happening, the world faces a new wave of refugees, which “will create more instability in the entire region”. For the implementation of the UN plan for resolving the situation will require $4.4 billion.
