Poland has nominated Jacek Saryusz-Wolski candidate for the presidency of the European Council
WARSAW, March 4 — RIA Novosti. Poland officially nominated MEP of the opposition party “Civic platform” Jacek Saryusz-Wolski for the presidency of the Council of Europe, said the foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski.
“I have just sent a diplomatic note declaring Jacek Saryusz-Wolski candidate of the Polish government to the post of President of the European Council,” — said Waszczykowski, quoted by PAP.
The press service of the foreign Ministry, in turn, indicates that the note has been sent to the presidency of the European Council Malta.
The mandate of the current President of the European Council, former Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk expire this summer
The current government of Poland has repeatedly said it will not support his candidacy to re-election for a second term because he criticizes the Polish authorities and “promoting” their interests in the European structures.
The Financial Times wrote earlier that Prime Minister of Poland Beata Szydlo “interrogates representatives of other EU countries in allowing the replacement of Donald Tusk, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski at the head of the European Council,” but the leader of the ruling party of Poland “law and justice” Jaroslaw Kaczynski called this information “speculation” and refused to comment.
