Members of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg adopted in the third reading a bill on renaming the municipal district Parnas. New name of “Sergievskaya”, adopted in honor of St. Sergius of Radonezh will become official from July 1 this year, reports RIA Novosti.
The name change in an explanatory note to the bill due to the need to reflect cultural, historical and other local traditions and peculiarities, writes “Fontanka”. In addition, the renaming was requested by many locals.
How Sergius of Radonezh is associated with the territory of the municipality, the document is not explained. However, in his text States that “in our days, St. Petersburg residents revere the name of the monk”. “In the name of St. Sergius of people remember their moral revival that has made possible the revival of the political”, — stated in the bill.
The document was presented to the St. Petersburg legislative Assembly on 15 February the head of the district Alexey Cherezov. He, as reported by “Interfax”, said that the coincidence of the name of the County with one of the Russian political parties is not the primary motive for renaming.
The initiative Cherezova sharply scarified by the Deputy from “Fair Russia” Alexey Kovalev. He also requested to allocate a month to the amendments to align the bill with the toponymic Commission of the city, but the parliamentary majority did not support him, giving only two days.
The historic district of Parnas in the North of Petersburg, on the territory which is the modern district, got its name in the XVIII century, thanks to the same hill, built by order of Catherine the great. The same or similar names have Parnassa street, railway station and metro “Parnas”, Parnassian overpass.
