Blue pond, with bright blue water is located on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, at the foot of mount Tokachi to the South-East from the town of Biei. It is just 2.5 miles from famous hot springs platinum.

Water has become one of the main natural attractions of Japan in 2012, when photographer Kent Shiraishi sent pictures of this place on international photo contest National Geographic. After that the fame of the picturesque pond spread across the globe and tourists began to come here to see this beauty.

In fact, the Blue pond in Biei — artificial and fairly young reservoir. After the eruption of volcano Tokachi in 1988, the Japanese authorities built a dam to protect the area of distribution of mud debris flows. Water detained concrete construction, and formed a pond.

Soon people noticed that the water in the Blue pond of Biei is characterized by an unusual intense color. There have been many studies, but the exact answer to the question “Why water has such an amazing color?” scientists have not found.

It is believed that the water in the pond is constantly mixed with the river, the saturated aluminum hydroxide, which comes from hot springs. This combination has a reflective effect similar to the one which has the atmosphere of the Earth. Thanks to the water in the Blue pond and has a rich turquoise blue color.

It is noteworthy that in different seasons and from different angles the water can have a different color from green and turquoise to dark blue. The most impressive effect of blue water can be seen from September to October, the first frost. Then the surface of the pond is covered with a thin layer of ice that gives it a more rich color.
