Walker predicted new sanctions of the West against Russia over the Kerch incident

Moscow. 17 Dec. INTERFAX.RU — special Envoy of the US state Department in Ukraine Kurt Volker expressed the belief that the West in the next two months will impose additional sanctions against Russia in connection with the incident in the Kerch Strait on November 25.

“Earlier today I met with our European colleagues, and we talked about it (the tightening of sanctions against Russia — if). We introduced a package of sanctions associated with the Crimea, sanctions for the failure of the Minsk agreements. We talked about what needs to be taken in connection with the events in the sea of Azov,” said Walker.

“In Europe, held discussions on whether to introduce a separate fourth package of sanctions, or new ones will be added to Crimean sanctions — said the special representative.

However, the idea of what should be the reaction in the form of additional sanctions, apparently, is being developed. And I wouldn’t be surprised if this happens within the next month or two.

Earlier, EU leaders agreed to a six-month extension of sectoral sanctions for Russia, expiring on 31 January 2019.

Walker on Monday also said that he intended in December to travel to Moscow, but it prevented the incident in the Kerch Strait on November 25.

“Earlier I offered to make a visit to Moscow in December and were preparing to arrange it when Russia attacked the Ukrainian Navy in the Black sea, took ships and took the sailors captive” — he said at a briefing.

He reminded that in connection with this incident, the President of the United States Donald trump canceled talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was held on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina.
