Sanakoev said that this phenomenon has been described in the scientific literature 30 years ago. In cold regions it can be observed about twice a year in winter.

Chief forecaster of the Ural hydrometeorological centre Galina Shaporenko confirmed to RIA Novosti that the light poles are connected with thin ice crystals in the air. At the same time, she dismissed the comparison with Northern lights.
“Northern lights does not look right. The images show that the pillars are vertical, and the light source — city lights” she said, adding that on the same principle are formed the halo.
