Died former Governor of the Smolensk region, Anatoly Glushenkov

January 16 at the age of 75 years died a former Governor of the Smolensk region, Anatoly Glushenkov.

The then Director of JSC “iceberg” (previously Smolensk refrigerator plant.— “B”) Anatoly Glushenkov was elected head of the Smolensk region on April 25, 1993. In fact, Mr. Glushenkov became the first popularly elected Governor of the region: in the election he defeated the incumbent head of the region, the representative of the party “Democratic choice of Russia” Valery Fadeevym, who was appointed the President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin.

However, at the head of the region Anatoly Glushenkov able to stay only one term. In may 1998, Anatoly Glushenkov lost the election the Communist candidate Alexander Prokhorov and left the office. And soon left the city of Smolensk, he moved to Moscow as a member of the Federation Council, where he chaired the Committee on Affairs of the Commonwealth of independent States (CIS). After 2000 years Anatoly Glushenkov retired from active public and political activities.
