The court sent a 96-year-old accountant of Auschwitz in jail

The German constitutional court rejected the appeal on the conviction of a former employee of Auschwitz Oskar Groening, and decided to send 96-year-old defendant to prison. About it reports Reuters.

Groening worked in the Auschwitz accountant. He among other things was counting seized from the prisoners of the camp funds. In 2015, he was sentenced to four years in prison. However, the defense demanded the postponement of the punishment, citing his age and health.

The lawyers insisted that a prison sentence would violate the constitutional right of Groening to life. The constitutional court rejected this argument.

Groening found guilty of aiding and abetting the murder of more than 300 thousand people. According to the court, this means that receiving punishment is of special importance.

During the first hearing in 2015, the prosecution stated that Groening, despite the fact that haven’t killed anyone with his own hands, supported the regime responsible for mass killings, money seized from the arrested Jews.

Groening admitted his guilt and said that at the time of sending to work in Auschwitz at the age of 21 years, shared the ideas of Nazism.

Auschwitz is one of the largest Nazi concentration camps. Located near the town of oświęcim (Polish territory annexed by Germany). In 1941-45 years there were killed about 1.4 million people, mostly Jews.
