The Kiev court upheld the freedom of Mikhail Saakashvili

The Pechersky district court of Kiev left at liberty to arrest the ex-President of Georgia and former Governor of the Odessa region Mikhail Saakashvili. The judge Larisa Sokol thus rejected the prosecution’s request on house arrest.

The prosecution demanded Saakashvili two months of round-the-clock house arrest.

At the beginning of the meeting, the lawyers of Saakashvili sought to be released from the so-called aquarium — a glass box for the defendants. It has not caused objections from prosecutors and the request for protection was granted.

Saakashvili in the courtroom, said that he considers himself a prisoner of war, house arrest, called the attempt to separate him from his political activities.

Together with his supporters, he sang the anthems of Ukraine and Georgia.

Among those who came to support Saakashvili in court was, in particular, the leader of the party “Rodina”, former Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko. She and another nine deputies of the Verkhovna Rada expressed his willingness to take bail Saakashvili.

Saakashvili, was detained in Kiev on the evening of 8 December. He was placed in a temporary detention facility of the security Service of Ukraine (SBU), where he went on hunger strike.

In the night of Saturday when it became known about the arrest, detention center gathered supporters of Saakashvili.

As reported the representative of the Ministry of internal Affairs of Ukraine Artem Shevchenko, Saakashvili, was detained in the apartment of the former head of the main Directorate national police of the Luhansk region Yuri Pokerparty.

The Prosecutor offered to place a detainee policies under house arrest and required to wear an electronic bracelet. The necessity of this measure, the state argued, in particular, fears for the safety of Saakashvili.
