Official Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the rejection of the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, head of the Russian football Union (RFU) Vitaly Mutko for the elections to the Council of the International football Federation (FIFA). Earlier Friday, The Washington Times reported that Mutko was not able to stand for election to the Board of FIFA, since it is not tested for compliance with the requirements of the organization. According to the newspaper, a barrier to participation in the elections was the Union work of the Vice Prime Minister with the post of the head RFS.
Mutko said that he is not going to appeal the decision of the organization. “I wanted to run again, but FIFA is now represented by the Committee according to slightly changed criteria. Introduced a new criterion, the political neutrality,” said he.
Mutko was part of the FIFA Executive Committee since 2009.
