Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is not allowed to register a candidate at the next election. On Thursday, April 20, according to Reuters.
The current President Hassan Rouhani in the number of candidates entered. Also as a candidate was approved by the hardliner Ebrahim Raisi.
Earlier it was reported that Ahmadinejad had applied for registration as a candidate. It was noted that this step is regarded as a challenge to Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who insisted on refusal of the former head of the state to participate in these elections.
Registration of candidates for participation in presidential campaign began on Monday, April 10. Elections are scheduled for may 19.
Ahmadinejad was President from 2005 to 2013. He held conservative and anti-American line, advocated the strengthening of ties with Russia and the Arab countries. Notoriety brought him his anti-Israel statements, Ahmadinejad spoke to “wipe Zionism from the face of the earth”, called the Holocaust a myth and proposed to give the whole of Israeli territory to the Palestinians.
The Iranian Constitution forbids the President to hold the chair for three consecutive terms, in 2013, became President Hassan Rouhani.
