Scientists managed to establish that during the time when the lake started to melt, and in places of a congestion of gas fell more than 15 meters. The researchers think that the lake contains large concentrations of methane. With the melting of the permafrost it is released into the atmosphere only adds to global warming. As you know, methane is 23 times more effective at trapping heat in the Earth’s atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
Observations by Russian scientists in 2012, 2014 and 2016 showed that the release rate of methane in the Russian Arctic, too, is steadily increasing.
