“This is the first successful implementation of the EKO lions. The idea was to improve our knowledge, improve the level of understanding of big cats and to move quickly in research,” said Dr. Isabelle Kayaalti, principal investigator of the project.
Over the past 25 years the number of African lions has declined by more than 60%. Despite the fact that these animals usually breed well in captivity, in the wild they are in danger of isolation, inbreeding, destruction of habitat, poaching and trophy hunting.
Scientific breakthrough by scientists from the University of Pretoria, gives hope that in the future will be able to eliminate the threat of extinction of the tiger, Iberian lynx and snow leopard.
