Vasiliev: a quarter of Russia’s population is not fluent functional reading
ABAKAN Republic of Khakassia/, July 30. /TASS/. About a quarter of Russian citizens do not possess functional reading, said Monday at a meeting with pedagogues of the Republic of Khakassia, Minister of education Olga Vasilyeva.
According to her, features that could not be overcome at an early age, accumulate to the middle classes, and then to solve the problem becomes almost impossible. “The child reads the text, do not understand reading,” stated Vasilyev.
She added that by 2022, Russia faces the task to “back in five” countries on the skills of functional reading.
In studies of PISA (international programme on the assessment of educational achievements of students, Programme for International Student Assessment) and PIRLS (the International study of the quality of reading and understanding the text) under the accuracy (functionality) the reader is invited to understand the ability of the learner to comprehend written texts and their reflection, to use their content for their own purposes.
