Scientists have uncovered unexpected danger of obesity
MOSCOW, 27 Jun — RIA Novosti. Scientists from the USA found that obesity has a negative impact on the stem cells that produce blood. The results of the study were published in the journal of Experimental Medicine.
By conducting experiments on mice, the researchers found that obesity creates a burden on the so-called hematopoietic stem cells, or hemocytoblasts located in the tissues of the red bone marrow within cavities of most bones.
The structure of the cells in the suffering from obesity mice was changed, which led to the reduction of their adaptability in the long term. However, even after the scientists put mice on a diet and regained their weight to normal, part of the structural changes persist.
The authors suggest that these changes are associated with increased expression of the gene Gfi1, which, in turn, causes oxidative stress of an organism for obesity.
According to scientists, this discovery will help to find out how the way of life, in particular, its food, is associated with the process of formation of blood cells and development of cancer of the blood.
