In translation the name means “bee hives”, and it is not surprising. The fact that most of the houses in the village located inside the volcanic formations in the form of cones that resemble beehives or termite mounds.

Cone-shaped rocks formed here as a result of volcanic activity, and the first settlement on the site appeared approximately 700 years ago.

It is believed that people were fleeing from the Mongol invasion, and so the idea was to live inside the rocks seemed logical to them. Besides, it turned out that the volcanic rock is easily treatable, in contrast to the stone rocks. Inside of these houses-the hives warm in winter and cool in summer, and for this reason, many villagers continue to live in the rocks, not trying to move to an ordinary house built in the neighborhood .

Because of its unusual architecture Kandovi popularity has grown, and here began arriving tourists. Local residents for the money let them into their homes to sleep and to get acquainted with the local flavor from the inside. And recently, in the village opened a real hotel in one of the rocks.
