The ancient temple of [kaylasanatkhe], located in the village of Ellora in the Indian state of Maharashtra, is an impressive architectural structure and the world’s largest monolithic complex, hewn out of huge rocks.

All the buildings, tunnels and sculptures carved into the rock: the construction was top-down, and in the process the workers have removed about 200 thousand tons of rock.

The [kaylasanatkhe] is the Central part of the big rock complex at Ellora. The temple covers an area of 1980 square meters and goes down into the rock at 33 feet. Its length is 55 meters, width 36 meters.
The [kaylasanatkhe] is dedicated to Lord Shiva, it symbolizes mount Kailash — the abode of Shiva in the Himalayas. View this post in Instagram

Apart from the temple, in the rock cut a rectangular courtyard, surrounded from the inside rows of niches with statues of deities. The estate also has a main sanctuary, a multi-hall for the worshippers and statues of animals. All the buildings are frescoed with figures of deities and traditional Indian patterns.
In 1983, an ancient complex of the Ellora caves was inscribed in the UNESCO list.
