In the Turkmen Karakum desert, 270 km from Ashkhabad is a fairly scary attraction — the Darvaza gas crater, also called “Door to hell” or “Gates of hell”. And this is no accident.

Darvaz is a giant hole in the ground with a diameter of 60 meters and a depth of 20 meters, which pulled out of the flames.
A huge fire pit was formed in 1971 when Soviet geologists discovered in this place large reserves of underground gas and tried to establish his production. But as a result of excavation and drilling collapsed under the earth drilling rig, equipment and vehicles, and out began to escape a dangerous gas.
To avoid harmful effects on humans and livestock, the scientists decided the pit with gas fire, hoping a few days of the underground reserves will burn out. But there it was. Darvaza gas crater burns continuously for almost 50 years.
