Perfect symmetry in everything.

The beauty and scale of some of the places can only be seen by climbing up into the air. Such is the Italian fortress town of Palmanova, also known as “city-star”.

Only from the top you can see that the city is a perfect symmetrical eight-pointed star. It was designed by the famous Italian architect Vincenzo Scamozzi at the end of the XVI century. The construction of Palmanova began on 7 October 1593.

This unusual layout of the city had two reasons — strategic and philosophical. First, the fortress in the shape of a star was a difficult target for the enemy, because in case of an attack on one of the other parties could support its neighbors and to discourage resistance.

Secondly, philosophers of the time believed that the symmetry in the city planning helps people to live better and develop.

Despite the unusual shape of the fortress and the presence of a multi-stage plan of the city and three defensive ditches, Palmanova was repeatedly captured by the enemy. In different years it belonged to the Italians, Austrians and French.

Now in Palmanova is home to around 5,400 people, and the beauty of this place can be seen from the air.
