Mnuchin: U.S. to impose sanctions against persons of “the Kremlin list” in the coming months
WASHINGTON, 6 Feb. /TASS./ The American administration is not configured to use restrictive measures in relation to sovereign debt of Russia and its derivatives. This was stated by the Minister of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, speaking on Tuesday at a hearing by a Committee of the house of representatives of the Congress of the United States.
“We are focused on specific sanctions against “bad” individuals and companies not on the sanctions in respect of the debt,” — said the Minister of Finance, speaking about the restrictions concerning Russia. Any other comments on this subject from him was not followed. This theme Mnuchin touched on in his speech with the filing of Congressman ed Perlmutter (Democrat from Colorado).
Earlier, the U.S. Treasury sent to Congress the enclosed report acknowledged that the use of the mechanism of sanctions against sovereign debt would have led to large-scale negative consequences for global financial markets and American investors. In addition, the application of such measures could undermine the unity of the West on the question of sanctions pressure on Russia, warned the Agency.
The potential use of such restrictions allows adopted last summer in the US, the law that provides for tougher sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea.
Speaking about the recently published “Kremlin report”, Mnuchin promised the congressmen that the United States will begin to impose sanctions against individuals from the open parts of the document in the coming months.
“We’re working on it right now, and in the next couple of months this will occur on a regular basis,’ he replied. Our administration has already imposed significant sanctions against Russia.”
Mnuchin stressed that his office continues to work and restrictions on Venezuela, Iran and North Korea.
