The tomb of “the great army of the Vikings” found in Britain

British archaeologists came to the conclusion that was found over 40 years ago mass grave in the North of the United Kingdom is probably the burial of the “great army of the Vikings,” invaded the island in the IX century.

The remains of nearly 300 people was discovered in the 70-ies of the last century in the village of Repton in Derbyshire, but until recently, scientists could not identify them precisely. Now, however, radiocarbon analysis of the remains conducted by experts at the University of Bristol showed that burials were made in the late ninth century, when these lands are invaded by “the Great army of the Vikings”, which forced the local Governor to leave the Kingdom.

“The Dating of the remains from a mass grave in Repton is important, because we know very little about the first voyages of the Vikings, which became the basis for the creation of Scandinavian settlements in England,” said archaeologist kat Jarman, head of research, writes The Independent.

In grave discovered 264 of the body, most of the buried were young men. With them were found weapons and artifacts of the Vikings.

Some of the skeletons showed signs of violent death, which further suggests that the soldiers invaded England.

Near the grave of Vikings, archaeologists also found the burials of four children. At least two of them have signs of injuries. According to experts, this could indicate a ritual murder committed for the burial of the Vikings.

Jarman said that research is still continuing, and although scientists still can not exactly say that in the tomb of the buried soldiers of the “great army”, but currently it seems very likely.
