The story of “Swan”

Supersonic Tu-160M2 (NATO — Blackjack) is an enhanced version developed in the USSR, the Tu-160. Among the pilots was nicknamed “White Swan”. Along with the Tu-95MS is the basis of modern fleet of long-range aviation of Russian air force. Tu-160 is the largest in the history of military aviation supersonic aircraft, the heaviest aircraft in the world, able to carry on Board cruise missiles with nuclear warheads.

It was created in response to the emergence of the U.S. Intercontinental bomber Rockwell B-1 Lancer. The need to create a new aircraft was due to the fact that armed strategic aircraft in the late 1960-ies there were only outdated subsonic bombers Tu-95 and M-4.

Compared to the American rival of the Tu-160 received a fly-by-wire control system, a rudder in the form of a rotatable upper part of the keel, a rotary “comb” that improves the flow at the junction of the movable and fixed parts of the wing. The Central beam in this plane with a length of 12.4 m and a width of 2.1 m, which is the main structural components of structures made of titanium according to unique technology. The maximum flight range of almost 14 thousand km by the Way, in 1985, the tests on the Tu-160 was first exceeded the speed of sound.

From 1981 to 1992, the year it was built 36 of these aircraft, although initially it was planned to make 100. The first 19 copies of the bomber since 1987, he transferred to bomber regiment in Pryluky, Ukrainian SSR. Therefore, after the collapse of the USSR, the Russian Federation was not a single new strategic bomber. In 1992-1994 was built six aircraft transferred to bomber regiment at Engels. In 1999-2000, Russia has received from Ukraine’s 11 strategic bombers (eight Tu-160 and three Tu-95MS), and some 600 air-launched missiles at the expense of the Ukrainian debt for Russian gas. Remaining in Priluki ten aircraft were scrapped at the insistence of the United States, another was transferred to a Museum in Poltava. Today in the battle of videoconferencing is 16 units.
