Moscow. 26 Dec. INTERFAX.RU — Shanghai Authorities are going to start to control the population of the city, and the area of land available for development, reported Tuesday by the Chinese media, citing the state Council of China.

According to the statement of the state Council, the number of Shanghai residents by 2035 shall not exceed 25 million people. The city authorities have developed a corresponding program, and the state Council approved it, it is noted in the message.

“By 2035, the permanent population of Shanghai will be controlled at around 25 million people. The total area of land available for development, not to exceed 3.2 thousand sq km,” the statement said.

The Chinese authorities believe that these measures are necessary to prevent “diseases peculiar to large cities,” such as increased environmental pollution, traffic congestion and lack of services in health and education.

Shanghai is the largest populated city not only in China but in the world. With a population of about 24 million people.
