Microbiologist of the University of Oregon told the publication Science Alert how to effectively wash their hands to prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria. The researcher believes that the majority of people are not thoroughly cleanses the skin of the palms against pathogens.
According to the scientist, there are two main strategies in the fight against microorganisms that multiply on the surface of the skin. First, it is reducing the number of bacteria by washing dirt with water and soap. This is enough to reduce the risk of infectious diarrhea. Second, more effective destruction of germs by using products with antibacterial substances (chlorine, peroxide, triclosan).
However, antibacterial drugs promote the emergence of resistant pathogenic bacteria. In addition, they can harm the health. So, it was found that triclosan, used in Soaps, toothpaste and deodorants, alters hormonal balance in animals.
Experts recommend moistening the hands with clean water, apply soap on the skin for 20-30 seconds, then thoroughly rinse and dry hands with paper towel or use a dryer. If soap and water are unavailable, use hand sanitizer containing 60 percent alcohol.
