Reuters: U.S. authorities are trying to get access to the correspondence in the Messenger of defendants in criminal cases
The US government is trying to force Facebook to change the encryption algorithm in Messenger app that law enforcement could access the conversations of suspects. According to sources Reuters, Facebook is disputing the requirements of the U.S. Department of justice, but the case is considered closed.
Facebook and the U.S. justice Department declined to comment on this information. However, one source claims that difficulties arose during the investigation of the gang MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha). This is one of the many street gangs of Central and North America. The Agency notes that the US President Donald trump often leads the activities of this gang as a demonstration of weak immigration policies.
Earlier, a similar situation occurred with the Telegram messenger in Russia. In March, the Supreme court upheld the orders of the FSB on the provision of keys to decrypt messages in Telegram. Then Roskomnadzor informed the messenger about the need for 15 days to provide the FSB necessary data Telegram but refused to do so.
About the consequences — in the material “Kommersant” “then what is the value of the correspondence, if it’s out?”.
