Elton is considered the largest salt lake in Europe and one of the most mineralized in the world.
Its area is 152 square kilometers.
It is believed that the name of the lake originated from the Mongolian word “Altyn-Nord”, which means “gold mine”. Before 1882 the Elton was mined salt, and in 1910, on its shore appeared medical sanatorium, which was later moved to another place.
