The Ministry explained why the retirement age is not raised before

The Minister of labour and social protection Maxim Topilin said at a meeting of the state Duma, in 1990-e years it was impossible to raise the retirement age because “decreased revenues, increased mortality has fallen sharply, the birth rate, all indicators were down”.

In 2000-e years, according to Mr Topilin, the main objective was to achieve a “normal level of pensions to pull up to an acceptable level of pensions”. This, said the Minister, also made it difficult to raise the age limit of retirement.

“Now we have major successes: we recorded the level of pensions, but it does not suit us, we must go forward”, — quotes the Minister “Interfax”.

Today, July 19, the state Duma adopted in the first reading a government bill to raise the retirement age. The document envisages a gradual increase in age of retirement to 65 years for men and 63 years for women. The deadline for amendments to the draft about amendments in pension laws extended from August 18 to September 24.
