Gorbachev urged the United States to start with Russia a serious discussion on nuclear weapons

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is confident that the decision of the United States to withdrawal from the Treaty on the elimination of intermediate-range and shorter-range nuclear forces (INF) is “the commitment of States to free themselves from any restrictions in the arms sector, to obtain absolute military superiority”.

In his opinion, the US wants “the world to dictate their will”. This statement is contained in the written Mr Gorbachev article for the newspaper “Vedomosti”.

“The hegemony of one country in the modern world impossible. The result of this destructive turn is completely different: the destabilization of the global strategic situation, a new arms race, increasing the randomness and unpredictability of world politics. This would harm the security of all countries, including the United States,” — said Mikhail Gorbachev.

He noted that “a new round of rocket race may prove even more dangerous”. Mr. Gorbachev is convinced that “changes in the world, does not require rejection of the agreements and further movement to the ultimate goal — the elimination of nuclear weapons”. “That is what should be the focus of our efforts”, — wrote the ex-President of the USSR.

Mikhail Gorbachev addressed members of the U.S. Congress. He expressed regret that “the acute political situation in the United States in recent years actually led to the failure of the dialogue between our countries”, and called “to overcome inter-party differences and begin a serious conversation” with Russia on the issue of nuclear weapons. “You need to understand the situation and, most importantly, to act, to not allow the world to slip into an arms race, confrontation, and hostility. Despite everything, I believe that it is still in our power,” — concluded Mr. Gorbachev.
