It is associated with many horrible myths and legends.

In the British County of Yorkshire in the vicinity of the town of Whitby are the ruins of one of the most interesting and mystical places in the UK — the ancient Abbey of Whitby.

First abbess of the Abbey was a nun Hilda (later canonized). She is the main heroine of the myths and legends associated with this place. For example, it is believed that she saved the surrounding villages from the invasion of snakes, reptiles turning into stones. Because Whitby Abbey is often called the “monastery of the stone serpent”: in the area you can find lots of fossilized shells of a spiral form, resembling a snake ring.

The Abbey was destroyed and abandoned during the reign of Henry VIII of England, and finally destroyed by bombing during the First world war.

Now you can see only the ruins of once majestic buildings and an old creepy cemetery, the gravestones which dated to 667 — 865 years.

Whitby Abbey is considered to be the dwelling place of shrouded ghosts and chilling legends. One of the stories says that the first abbess of the monastery that saved this place from snakes, ended his days very bad. According to legend, she broke the vow of chastity was immured alive in a wall of the monastery. Since then, her Ghost wanders the ruins of Whitby scares as local residents and curious tourists.

Another myth says that supposedly at the Abbey of Whitby once home to the famous Dracula. Bram Stoker, inspired by the ruins of an ancient monastery and the legend, described the Abbey in his book “Count Dracula” into a place of transformation of the vampire into a nasty dog.
