In the Austrian Salzburg is one of the biggest ice caves in the world called Eisriesenwelt. Its length is 42 km, and the depth of 407 meters.

Amazing limestone ice cave appeared due to the Salzach river, which over millions of years has drilled into the mountains, tunnels, and flowing down into the earth melting snow formed huge layers of non-melting ice.

Despite the fact that local hunters knew about the cave for many centuries, officially Eisriesenwelt was discovered in 1879 by a Salzburg naturalist Anton von Posselt-CARICOM who have studied the first 200 meters of the ice cave.

Now the cave is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. It is open for visits from may to November, but in the winter months, the entrance here is closed because of the danger of avalanches.
